Memories of Giant Red Rubber Balls...

Last night was my first official kickball game. Our Hash group signed up with a local kickball league to play as a team. We weren't sure we were going to be any good, but on Tuesday night we found out.

Turns out we're pretty good. Or at least, we're better than the team we were playing last night !! We won our game 8-2.

Now, for Florida, it was pretty cold out last night. We all had on long sleeves under our team t-shirts (our team color is black) and I got to wear my long track pants. Once we got out running around we were all warm. I was 8th in the "batting" order, and played outfield behind first base.

The rules in kickball are a little different that baseball. If someone errors, you only can take one base. You can't lead off bases and you can't steal. One of our teammates was pitching/bowling to the other team whilst smoking and drinking is beer. It was a TOTAL Kodak opportunity, which I missed out on by forgetting my camera. I'm DEFINITELY going to have it next week. I'd forgotten how much fun it was to throw a giant red rubber ball at someone and race around bases. SO FUN!! I did manage to get on base every time.. and even made it to third base once before I was forced out on a bases loaded scenario when I was coming home.

After kickball, we all head to MacDintons to play Flip Cup. Our team dominated that, too. Go figure, hashers can drink.

We'll see how things go next week when we take on our next challengers !!

And, my laptop is back to dead again. Definitely time for a new battery. *Sigh* More money

My 6 weird things...

I was tagged by Kate for 6 weird things about myself..... Hmmm lemme see.

1) Well, for one thing.. I'm a Hasher. If this doesn't qualify for weird I don't know what does. Basically, a bunch of grown adults run around on a trail trying to find splotches of flour another runner has left behind and then drink when we're finished. We also give each other crazy nicknames.

2) When I was little I wanted to be a librarian. I'm scarily obsessed with books. I can still spend all day in a library. I have a stack about about 50 books I want/have to read. I also love the smell of old books.

3) I have entire conversations with my dog. Mostly when my husband is out of town, but the dog is a great listener.

4) I get really irritated when people come in to my office and say "OH MY GOD doc, I'm SO blind !!!" These people are usually 20/25. Um.... yeah. I'm -10.00 and can't see the big E. Don't even talk to me about "blind".

5) My right foot is half a size bigger than my left. Which wouldn't be so bad if I didn't wear a size 10. When you wear a 10 the only other size in the store is 11. No one makes a 10.5 So, if I get shoes that fit my right foot, they're too big for my left and if I get shoes that fit my left, my right foot's in pain. Generally, the only shoes that I'm comfortable in are open in the back or my running shoes. They actually make a women's 10.5 in running shoes. Much love for my running shoes. (I love you Mizuno)

6) I love scarves (I have five and am making a sixth)... and I live in Florida.

I knew marrying a nerd would pay off !!

G fixed my computer last night. It's been out of commission almost the whole week with power supply problems. I'm not sure exactly what G did, but it works now.

Last night, G took the early flight home from Houston to surprise me. LOVED IT ! I actually got to spend the evening with him this way.. instead of watching the Tivo'd Office with him and going straight to bed.

I'll try to do some catch-up blogging through the rest of the day.

BTW --- No more open windows !! BOO !! It's 43 now.

Knitting Fiend

Kate has created a monster !!

Since I had Monday off, I decided to take Kate up on her offer to teach me to knit. I'd done it before back when I was younger.. much younger.. with my grandmother. Big pink metal needles and el-cheapo yellow yarn. The sexy. I think I managed to create exactly, nothing.

Earlier that day I stopped at the local yarn store (Knit n Knibble) for supplies. They were very sweet ladies: showed me what to choose from, what works well for beginners, set me up with some really great hardwood needles, and sent me off to Kate's. They also gave me their card and website for free clinics and help. The other ladies sitting on the couches there knitting were very supportive, excited, and told me to come back any time and join them. They were sweet, I just might have to. One of them was doing a GORGEOUS afghan with multiple colors which looked very intricate.

So, I arrive at Kate's with baggie in hand and we plop on the couch.

Step One: Keeping yarn ball away from inquisitive kitten.
Step Two: Casting on -- much like Cat's Cradle ! (I can do that)
Step Three: Knit Stitch --- my first few attempts were decent, dropped some stitches, but it made sense. I guess previous cross-stitch experience helps some.
Step Four: Perl --- Now, I think perling is easier. But, I think it's just me.

Knitting ended up being surprisingly easy. At least the two basic stitches. The rest I'm sure I can pick up from books and the like. So, if anyone has suggestions on good reference books, feel free. I'd also like any patterns for LIGHT WEIGHT things I can actually wear in Florida. There really is no call for scarves here. I already have four and really don't need the fifth one I am knitting now for practice. I'm actually thinking of frogging the one I started at Kate's so I can change it and put in some fancier stitches. An entire scarf of stockinette is too boring for my pretty yarn.

Thank you, Kate ! I'll have to come over another time for more girly knitting time !

My Sexxxy New Drapes!

After much slaving this weekend... G and I have new drapes. OOOOOOO.

One of my patients today had Chiari Malformation. I had to look it up and read about it after they left. I remembered it was neuro, remembered I did at one point know all about it.. and then never used said knowledge again. Very sweet patient.. and I'll keep him/her in my thoughts when they have surgery in two weeks. I hope it goes well.

I'm so sore

One of my running buddies convinced me to go out this evening and run on Bayshore Blvd. instead of running with the hash up by USF. Since it saved me 45 minutes in the car I said SURE!

Well, we GROSSLY underestimated how far away something was.. and ended up running 4.5 miles and walking the rest. Total trip 7.6 miles !!!!!!!!!!

Owwie. I'm going to be so sore tomorrow.

I'm alive, promise

My internet is finally up and running at work again. So, I should be up and running and blogging very soon. Internet was down at work for almost two weeks. I was going CRAZY! (ask Hema)

I have many many insurance claims to catch up on first, though ! I also have pictures of trips to Dallas, Christmas dinners that included rousing games of Pong and Pitfall, and hashing!
